Deciding not to endure the Seattle winter this year, I've gone to the southern hemisphere for six months. First a month of travel in Bolivia and north and central Chile, then on to southern Chile for my internship with the Chol Chol Foundation in Temuco. Fundacion Chol Chol is a fair trade organization that promotes the artisan work of Mapuche weavers.

isla del sol
More boat transport! Two hours on Lake Titicaca brings us to Isla del Sol. The island really lives up to its name with plenty of sun. Right when we land on the island, a man named Roberto tells us about the commuity hostal which he manages and shows us pictures of the rooms (each has a blue cupola!). We walk up the Inca Stairs with him for 30 minutes with our huge packs and are glad to make it all the way without passing out. Isla del Sol is full of donkeys, sheep, cute dogs, and eucalyptus trees. A good place to be. Dinner is by candlelight at Las Velas, a tiny restaurant in the eucalyptus forest and run by a gourmet chef who studied gastronomy in La Paz. That´s not saying much, but the food was really good and not at all like anything we ate in La Paz.
