Deciding not to endure the Seattle winter this year, I've gone to the southern hemisphere for six months. First a month of travel in Bolivia and north and central Chile, then on to southern Chile for my internship with the Chol Chol Foundation in Temuco. Fundacion Chol Chol is a fair trade organization that promotes the artisan work of Mapuche weavers.

macramé
I associate the word macramé with the 70s, all the gaudy plant holders made of brown and orange colored yarn. I didn't realize this craft also encompassed a finer grain of string. It is the string we made friendship bracelets out of in 7th grade. And I used to be really good at it and fast too! I quickly learned this week at the macramé workshop held at the regional museum of Araucania (where the Chol Chol Foundation's fair trade gift shop is located) that my aptitude for string-related arts has decreased. Luckily I had a job to do (take photos of the workshop!) so it was okay to give up on the mess of a bracelet I had started.
