beaches and beaches

Coquimbo is about 11km from La Serena and is known more as a working class port city. Port city = fresh seafood so we set out to have a seafood lunch on the water. We succeeded! In addition to enjoying the delicious food, we learned a lot of fish-related Spanish vocabulary as we ate our "loco" (aka abalone) empanadas. After lunch we stopped into a thrift store and met a really nice lady who told us all about Chile (how she can't stand Santiago but she loves the southern region where people are very nice). She said we could walk from Coquimbo all the way back to La Serena on the beach in about an hour. We decided to do that and ended up back at our hostal four hours later. Too many delightful distractions when strolling on the beach on the longest day of the year.
