Deciding not to endure the Seattle winter this year, I've gone to the southern hemisphere for six months. First a month of travel in Bolivia and north and central Chile, then on to southern Chile for my internship with the Chol Chol Foundation in Temuco. Fundacion Chol Chol is a fair trade organization that promotes the artisan work of Mapuche weavers.

jungle treasures
We go for another hike through the jungle today with Pato to look for animals. The highlight is seeing 43 squirrel monkeys jump across the canopy right above us. We also track peccaries and while we are doing that we see a handful of tayras cross our path. Pato shows us an orange fruit on the forest floor which we collect a handful of and bring back the seeds to make jewelry out of later. The seeds are just like miniature coconuts and polish up to make beautiful dark wood rings. We end the day with a night hike to a nearby lagoon to watch lightning bugs illuminate the floating plants on the water.
